The pride of Red Bank (and Kansas City) kicks off this consistently swinging set with a long, leaping version of his renowned One O'Clock Jump theme and the excitement never falters. Big, rotund Jimmy Rushing and Thelma Carpenter are the singers and clarinetist Artie Shaw pops up as a guest soloist on two rare and memorable tracks. Tenor ace Lester Young is heard on the one 1938 cut but every tune is pure Basie. A truly valuable and historic recording.
